Imagine you driving full speed towards a wall. If you don’t reduce your speed, you will eventually crash. Even if you break, there will be a point when it is too late, you will crash nevertheless.
The analogy with the car is often brought up in comparison to the climate crisis. But it is flawed. Because it is never too late to fight the climate crisis.
Of course, it would have been easier and cheaper, if we had taken the necessary steps decades ago, but we still can do a lot to prevent the worst.
It will be hard and expensive, but doable.
It is never too late to fight the climate crisis
To come back to the image from the beginning and use it as an analogy for the fight against climate crisis. If we reduce the speed, the wall will move further away. And if we come to a halt, the wall will fade into the void.
It is not only the climate crisis. For many things, it is never too late to do something. No matter how old you are, you can still start to learn something new, like playing the guitar or washing your hands after you used the toilet.
You can always apologize to an old friend you haven’t seen for years because of a stupid fight about if raisins are delicious or not.
And you can change your job, no matter how long you have been there.
I am definitely no role model and I don’t want to write about, how I quit my job because I already did. I am just an example of many, that it is never too late to change something.
Generally spoken.
Or is it too late to fight the climate crisis
Of course, if you start hitting the break one meter before you crash into the wall, it is too late. But at this moment you won’t read this blog post. At least, I hope that it is not responsible for your inevitable crash.
This article is for those who think, it doesn’t matter anymore if we change anything. Who believe we can’t prevent the climate crisis, we can’t hinder the rise of fascism, and we can’t stop the system from crumbling down.
This is not true.
For example, the climate crisis. Every prevented emission counts. Every tenth of a degree of warming less counts.
A fight for an emission neutral future is important.
To be honest, we won’t be able to stop human made climate change. At least in our lifetime, but we can make the planet at least livable for the generations to come.
We do not have to fight the climate crisis to save the planet, we need to save mankind.
The people in power, the men with money, aren’t concerned about the planet, and they do not care about mankind. They care about themselves and their fortune.
The good thing is, we are more, and we do not need them, but they need us.
As I already mentioned, it is a hard fight, but it is a necessity.
It is also difficult to prevent the world from being ruled by authoritarians. Maybe we can’t. But it won’t last because it is a bad system that harms people, and at one point the fascists and dictators will fall.
We have to fight that the time span is short and that the new government isn’t just another kind of bad, as it happened recently in Syria.
Fight for system change
Altogether, the system is already crumbling down. That is not a bad thing at all. Systems changed far more often than the climate, and it was always because of humans.
All the crises seem a lot. But in reality it is one global system crisis. If we change the system, we can stop or at least slow down human made climate change because there is no one in power anymore who doesn’t care about the planet and us. People will have food, education and somewhere to live, all of us.
It is not too late to fight for a good system. System change will come inevitably, and we must have a better system at hand when it happens.
It is challenging to stay positive in times like this. I can’t do it all the time. It is okay to become angry, frustrated, or depressed.
But this article shall assure you, it is never too late to change something, and you are not alone.
2025 will be a difficult year, but we can work together to make it the best possible and to start changing the system for the better.
I complete dedicate myself to this mission this year. I would be happy if you join me.
No violence
One more thing. I talk a lot about fighting in this article. What I mean is a peaceful fight. We need to use every democratic tool we have, and even civil disobedience is a legit way to go. This doesn’t mean you are not allowed to self-defense, but avoid violence as good as possible.
